Welcome to Sara Piazza Photography & Music
Photography
I have been photographing people and other beautiful subjects since high school, having had my start in the days of a simple, all-manual Kodak Retina IIa, Tri-X film, and a darkroom in my closet. I loved the darkroom: the mixing and pouring and measuring; the wet image taking form, looming up under the orange glow of the safe-light. Along around 1998 I made the jump over to digital photography, like so many of us, kicking and screaming, but I eventually embraced it - whole hog, acquiring every manner of still and video camera, and every lens and accessory, learning all the software along the way, and I was glad to be out of the dark, working in the light, in the fantastic, limitless world of digital photography.
One day around 2023 I woke up and realized I missed film, so I got myself an all-manual film camera and went back to my roots. I develop the film in my kitchen, and now enjoy digitizing my negatives and processing the images on my computer. And yes, I still use my digital cameras; the best of both worlds.
Over the years I have photographed children (having gotten lots of practice on my own three, and am now enjoying photographing my eight grandchildren), weddings, families, and events, and for several years worked as a columnist and photojournalist for the Martha’s Vineyard Times. To this day, I love telling stories with photos and videos. I also love street photography, whether here on the Vineyard, or in Boston or in Ireland. Wandering the streets and photographing and connecting with people is one of my favorite pastimes.
Photography is my joy, my passion, my therapy; one of the many ways I engage with the world and with the people around me.
I love families and children and I would love to photograph your family or event.
Please contact me here for information on pricing and availability, or stop by my gallery in Edgartown for a conversation and to see my work in person.
Music
I am also a musician, music having been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, beginning as a small child on piano, while also teaching myself a few chords on my mother’s baritone ukulele, enough so that I could join in with the family (and neighbor) hootenannies around the kitchen table.
Along the way I have picked up guitar, violin, Irish fiddle, bouzouki, bodhran, to name a few.
For the better part of thirty years I have studied and worked in liturgical music, having worked as a cantor and Torah reader in the synagogue, and now as a Catholic cantor and providing music for Mass. Chanting and singing sacred text is very important to me; it is my prayer. I have also composed music for church and synagogue and have been a teacher of religious education in a variety of settings.
For many years I ran a popular family music program, Music with Sara, where children and their parents enjoyed singing, dancing, drumming and other musical activities together. These days, my music studio is filled with my grandchildren playing violins, guitars, drums, and more. I have also composed many children’s songs.
For fun, I play in Irish pub sessions in Ireland, Boston, and Cape Cod, as well as hosting Irish traditional music sessions in my home photo gallery. During the warm weather look for us out on my front porch, regaling passersby with fiddles and songs, oftentimes with strangers coming off the sidewalk and joining in.
I love living in the heart of Edgartown, I love people, and I love creating community. Stop on by!
